While I was growing up, I'd get my dad or mom to cut it and the first time I went to a real barber was once I hit university. I had it embarassingly long for a bit in high school but after I got over the whole "grunge" thing I opted to keep it short ever since. It's just easier that way and if it looks like shit I just wear a hat. Anyway, I've been going to this place close to my uncle's that cuts for 1000 yen or roughly 10 bucks ever since moving here. It's a mom and pop shop and they have a rotating staff of about 4 people. 1 really young guy who sucks, 1 middle-aged guy that also sucks and smells of liquor or cigarettes and 2 ladies that do a nice job but are lazy so they pass me off to either of the 2 guys whenever they get the chance. I went today and got the middle-aged guy (yaaay...) who gave me the wierdest cut so, yeah, hat for a week. I even had to trim hairs he missed once I got home. It's fucked! Anyway, the point of this post is that I've decided (next time) I need to dish out a bit and get a real haircut for once in my life.

TAK

Bringin' the heat

Managed to finish that issue of Secret Invasion last week. I've already started on the 3rd and last installment. After that, it's a trip home and then back here to concentrate on Japan again. I've been kinda gestating ideas on characters and plot for the last few months. The psychology behind all this has been, uh, complicated and way too cheese to put in words so I won't. haha.

Anyway, I rarely see angry people in Japan. Everyone is pretty careful about not openly showing their emotions so even when there's an argument happening it's hard to tell. The other day, tho, like, whoa. I was on my local train platform and this dude was just goin' OFF on his phone. It's all the more shocking to see since it practically never happens. But, yeah. He's all, like, "I'm gonna sue your ass this and sue your ass that". It was rather entertaining after I got over the initial surprise. Actually, it was all the more entertaining since the security people who's job it is to keep the peace didn't want anything to do with this irate maniac and kept well away from him during the entire show. Good job, guys.

Also in the news. It's hot. Like, freakin' hot.

Oh, that MJ piece I did for the comic store in Chicago called Challengers has been printed and is hanging in their window. Yay! I even got the best spot so I feel special. Store owners Patrick and Dal sent me pics so I'll share them with you all here. If you live in their area please go and spend lots and lots of money.

TAK

Again...

Sorry for the absence. I've had a lot to deal with the past few weeks. I had another cockroach outbreak a few days ago which prompted an entire gutting of my apartment and a thrice over with a new vacuum I felt I should buy. I really don't understand where they come from since I've been free of problems for the past 7-8 months. I suspect they come through cracks in my window screen since I sleep with an open window? I dunno. I'll be monitoring things for the next week.

The hose that drains water from my washing machine also burst, resulting in a major flood of my bathroom area. Now, THAT was a pain in the ass. Especially since I was right in the middle of a wash. I used every towel I had in my place for clean up and now I have water damage on my walls. Geez. Zero return on my deposit for sure...

I'm also inking like a madman right now. The current issue has a lot of characters and complicated backgrounds so it's been taking me a bit longer to finish pages.

Anyway, a pretty stressful week. I decided to watch Evangelion from the top again for kicks since it's been about 10 years since I last saw it and, shit, it's freakin' depressing, man. Not something to watch at a time like this!

TAK

FELIPE!!!!

Felipe Smith's "Peepo Choo" in this month's Morning 2!!! So crazy that I'm not sure when I should be sleeping. I really need to stick with normal hours. Geez... I blame the new subway line on most of this though. The new Fukutoshin Line opened this past weekend and it's made it a lot easier to fuck off and go party in Shinjuku and Shibuya. 12 minutes to Shinjuku door-to-door! When I chose to live in Ikebukuro I had no idea that such a potential miracle was going to happen. I love this new line, dammit!

I watched Robocop last night. It's been a while so I decided to check it out again and I was not disappointed. For a pretty dated movie it still holds up well. I was surprised. It brought back memories of the Robocop TV show which sucked and the old nintendo game which was awesome. I need to find a ROM of that...

I'm thinking about adjusting the layout of my workspace again. Staring at the same wall for months kinda gets on my nerves and is bad for motivation. I'm also considering getting some plants which I'll eventually kill but I think my place needs some green. Man, I really wish I had a balcony.

Crap. This is turning into a really boring post. I'll have art for next time.

TAK

More garbage!!

This is something I was working on earlier this year but felt it wasn't coming together so decided to ditch it. I liked the concept and a few stray ideas from it but, ultimately, it's not what I had in mind so it's done. It's set in a near-future-alt-universe which I always seem rely on like a crutch and I think that's pretty much what kept bothering me about it. I have something else in mind now so, uh, gonna keep chugging ahead. Anyway, you can check out my progress below. These are just rough sketches, btw, hence, the lack of backgrounds.

TAK

Taking out the trash

So, I'm almost finished with a large chunk of work. It's always rather anti-climactic after these intensive and furious work weeks and I'm always left with mixed feelings of joy and melancholy. Like you've just ran your heart out and unsure what to do next? Well, I have more pages to draw for something else so that's a null theory but, uh, whatever. You get the point.

I usually do some cleaning after an issue and since today is recycle day for me I decided to organize and sort my papers and plastics that have built up for the past few weeks. They're pretty strict about how things are sorted and disposed of here. I have a colourfully illustrated flyer for how plastic bottles should be cleaned and crushed, while papers should be sorted between cardboard, regular paper and hard bristol type stuff. Not to mention how glass bottles should have their labels peeled off and metal caps removed and seperated. It all sounds pretty bothersome compared to the blue bin dumping I'm used to in Canada but I find it to be a rather soothing process. Deconstructing a big pile of crap into neatly tied and organized bundles tickles my usual disorganized self. It's... cathartic.

Gonna do fun things today. It's raining and a typhoon is nudging ever closer but, meh. I feel like spending money and taking pictures for some reason.

TAK

NRT to YYZ

Anybody know of good sites to go to for cheap airline tickets? Preferably catering to travel between Tokyo and Toronto in August of this year. I've been looking but the ones I've found are about $1500 bucks and I'd like to find something a little less painful. $500 bucks of that is purely on gas, btw. It's insane... And here I thought rising gas prices had nothing to do with me.

Spent the last week pretty much at my desk as predicted. It's been a hectic week but it's almost over. Getting a little stir crazy. Need. To. Get. Out.

I watched some old episodes of Initial D last night while working. I'm not a big anime guy but I've held on to these DVDs for some reason. I'm not a big car guy either so my fandom for this property makes no sense to me but I likes it. Speaking of anime, I read that Blade of the Immortal was being turned into one soon which is pretty exciting news. I'm curious to see how they translate Samura's detailed style into animation. The fight scene's will most definitely be mind-blowing, I'm sure.

Anyway, this is all I have to talk about from my lame-o week.

TAK

Don't forget the coffee!

I've got another restless week coming up. I don't think I'll be able to leave the apartment which kinda sucks. Actually, knowing that I know I can't leave is even worse... But, y'know, it's nice to be back in a marathon and not a sprint.

I'm watching Good Will Hunting as I work right now. It's one of those "safe" movies I can watch without really watching. It's also one of the only movies I like Robin Williams in aside from Dead Poet's Society since he's not all crazy and doing his hyper-active schtick. It's also got a lot of subtle movements and facial reactions that I find inspiring. My favourite scene is towards the end when Damon and Driver fight and she scrunches up her brow right before she cries. Her expression is heartbreaking and pretty priceless.

Short post.

TAK

Another week

I was thinking last night that there is probably some dude out there that looks exactly like me. However, I'm asian so we all look alike anyway, hence, more probable?? There's probably a facial twin for everyone on this freakin' planet actually. Even an imagined face would probably have a person to go with it. Well, within certain limits of course... This is the sorta crap I think about on a daily basis, btw. Your welcome.

I decided to not drink for a while. Y'know, booze. It's a bit of a social/physical experiment to see if it's still possible to have a good time without it. Not to mention avoid being lethargic and unmotivated the next day which was something I've been experiencing lately after party nights. It's not like I've set dates or anything. Just going with the flow.

I was recently asked to draw an image for a store banner. The store being Challengers in Chicago which just opened a few weeks ago I believe. The subject matter was open to my choosing but I went with something familiar and familiar to me was MJ and the gang. It was really nice to get to draw them again to be honest. So, if you're in the area, drop by the store and hopefully you'll see my piece in one of their windows. They have a slew of other great creators contributing so it's like a free open gallery which is kinda cool. Anyway, my contribution:TAK

Post Mortem

I'm, uh, really tired right now. Hit the gym for the first time in a month this afternoon and I think it did me in. I felt pretty guilty for neglecting my body for so long I undertook an extra self-flagellating routine. I think that's how you spell it... and I think the grammer is correct on that. Ahh, fuck it. You get the point. The gym I go to recently banned parking bikes in front of their building so now all the bikes are lined up tight against all 3 other walls. It's almost as if the bikes are propping the building up. There's room for artful insight into the visual but, again, I'm too tired.

I was gunning to buy some jeans yesterday but the store I favour was closed for renovations and it killed my shopping mojo for the rest of the day. I had plans to start filling in gaps in my summer wardrobe but I completely deflated, walked around Shibuya with some friends and just got wasted afterwards. It was pretty bad. Luckily I had enough smarts to take last train home just in time to feel a 6.5 earthquake while lying in my futon. All in a day's work I tell ya.

I've started to sleep with only window in my apartment open again. I sleep right under it. It's nice to breathe crisp fresh air while sleeping. Only thing is, I'm on the first floor and the window is quite large and anyone could easily jump through from the street, knock me out and steal all my shit. I'd most likely wouldn't even wake up so you could ignore that second step. Anyway, think about it. Actually, don't.

TAK

Done!

Finally finished the Runaways issue this morning. My finger tips are numb from gripping my ink pens too hard and my wrist is killing me. It was an extended holiday in Japan starting last Saturday but I didn't get to see the light of day since I was so freakin' busy. Think I'm gonna let off some steam by doing some shopping. I need some new clothes for the summer anyway.

I've booked my ticket backhome in August. Just for 2 weeks but I'll be back in Toronto in time for the fan expo so I plan to check that out for a day. My sister's wedding is on the same weekend so I'll probably hit it on Friday all jetlagged. It'll be good to see some old faces and see what's new with comics. I haven't really read any in a long time. In fact, come to think of it, I haven't picked up anything here as well in a while. I used to pick up Afternoon every month but I found that I was only reading Blade of the Immortal and some random gag strips from it that I stopped. I flip through comic magazines at the local 7-11 cuz, y'know, that's free but I feel like the dude at the register is always eyeing me to buy it so... haha.

What else have I been doing... Oh, I attended a friend's wedding 2 weekends ago. Congrats, Matt!! I wore my spankin' new suit to it which was kinda cool and different. It's been about 3 years since wearing one and it felt kinda nice actually. The wedding was in the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi which is probably one of the nicest and classiest places to get hitched. My first time to see a shinto style wedding where the bride and groom were decked out in wedding kimono's and a very foreign progression of events leading up to the exchange of rings. No kiss! Well, they made up for it at the after party.

Oh, crap. I just remembered I need to get my J-passport... Man, looking at all the documents I need it's gonna be another marathon around Tokyo. Yay, me.

Tak

Where's the buttah??

Butter shortage in Japan. I heard about this the other day and went to check at my local supermarket and, indeed, no butter. What am I supposed to put on my toast??

Racing to finish the first issue of Secret Invasion: Avengers/Runaways. I'll have pencils done in the next coupla days and then it's on to inks. I'll most likely be bar flying there in the next few weeks so drop by and spend your yen. Atsushi is a jewellery designer and has combined his love for bling and booze into a new concept bar. So, basically, you get drunk and then buy his gear that's on display. You can find the link and a map here.

Oh, I turn 30 at the end of the week. I'm not around much right now. You'll have to forgive me. Been working on a bunch of things that have kept me away from doing anything interesting to talk about.

Umm... It's warm. Cherry blossoms are blooming all around Tokyo and I'm hitting a big party this weekend to soak it all in. Will have pictures of that. Maybe. If I'm not too drunk.

A test piece I did for the Fairy Tales thing that I'm half done. You can find the colour version in a recent issue of Previews so I figure it's okay to post these. I got off the wrong station so I had a bit of a hike to the gallery but it was a nice day so I wasn't complaining. Found the gallery pretty easily and, since no one else was there, got to take it all in pretty much by myself. Ahh, the benefits of not having a real job.

Anyway, the gallery isn't all that big but it's a nice clean and open space. There were about 60 pieces in total, all in nice frames and sized at around B4. They were lined up tight together in 2 parallel rows across all 4 walls. All pieces were priced at 105,000 yen which is equal to about a grand US or Canadian. A steal if you ask me. Oh, not all. A handful were not for sale. I went on the second day and a third were already taken so I'm sure by the end of the week they'll all be spoken for. I was tempted to purchase one but the subject matter was, well, not exactly user-friendly? I woulda jumped at the chance if any were from either his Blade or Ohikkoshi works. I was hoping they would have prints or some light items like that but nadda. They had the artbook though.

I'm pretty miminal in terms of mediums I use so seeing an entire gallery filled to the brim with nothing but pencil drawings was something quite special to me. I've had the fortune of seeing original pages from various artists over the last year but this stuff took detail and subtlety to the next level. Reproductions rarely do the actual work justice and this was an example, case and point. It's quite something seeing erased lines covered with the final strokes and the problem solving process all right there happening in front of my face. The faces were so crisp and figures so well defined. The work was B4 sized, yes, but they came across much much bigger. Pretty outstanding. I wish I could describe it better to you but there's just no way I'm afraid. I'm getting too emotional about this so I'll stop...

All I know is, I'll definitely be making another trip before the show ends.

TAK

Shoppin', Droppin' and Shakin'

Went out shoppin' today. I needed to pick up some supplies like drafting pens and some ink for my nibs. If you know what Tokyu Hands is, I went there since they have pretty much anything you'd ever want in terms of stationary. Had a quick bowl of ramen afterwards, played some Tekken 6 and got my ass royally whooped (I need to play as someone other than Law for a change...) and, finally, made a trip to a bookstore for kicks. I ended up dropping about 70 bucks on impulse buys. Anyway, 4 books in total plus some posters:

First is William Gibson's Pattern Recognition. I wanted to get his newest release Spook Country but the oversized softcover was around 40 bucks so I decided to get this instead since it was about a quarter the price. I have no idea what it's about but the cover looked cool so...

The blueish book is Asano Inio's 2nd and final book to Oyasumi Pun Pun. I got the special edition version so it came with 2 keychains. I dunno. I'm a sucker. My love for Asano Inio knows no bounds and any book by him will make me drop yen in a second. The first book was thoroughly amazing and I expect this second half to blow my mind in equal parts.

Third is Hiroyuki Samura's Blood Hurley's Carriage. He's another creator I have no qualms about giving money to. It's a one-off book about an orphan girl who is sold into sexual slavery... or something to that effect. I haven't read it yet but, uh, it's kinda messed up. I'm gonna use this as a segway for something else below. One second...

And lastly, is a ref book on factories, pipes and all things industrial. This was the best find of the day for me. I can stop scouring the net for shitty low-rez images now. Yay.

Anyway, the segway.

I was touring Ginza galleries with my friend Aleks a few months ago and happened to walk into a small gallery that caters to erotic and bondage art. It's called Vanilla and, at the time, it was showing paintings, prints and illustrations from local and international talent. Very cool stuff. They had flyers for future shows lying around so I sifted through them nonchalantly when I found one for a Samura show. Like, WHAT. It starts this week and you can see info and artwork examples from it here. What they'll be showing are originals from his artbook Hitodenashi no Koi (The Love of the Brute) which I never ended up buying despite my penchant for throwing money at the man. This show? SO there. I'll tell you how bad you missed out. HA!

Also, been feeling earthquakes all weekend. Japan rocks.

TAK

2:25am

A quiet Sunday night. About to juggle 2 projects at once plus a third on the side for good measure. I think I needed deadlines again to kick my ass into gear since I spent the last year doing things purely on my own time and in my own way. I'm finding I've been sorta lethargic about drawing since the new year started and been focusing on other things to keep my mind occupied. I can't multi-task so it's been a choice of either work or life but not at the same time. Which doesn't really work when you're a freelancer...

Short post. After close to 4 years of use I've gotten ample milage out of them so it was about time I get some new ones anyway. My ipod itself is still running strong which is good. I have one of the old models with the play and menu buttons seperate from the clicker wheel. Seems like a dinosaur compared to the new video pods and all the fancy colours. I was tempted to replace it but I hate replacing things that aren't broken :p

I'm off to do some skiing in Niigata this weekend. Pretty stoked about it. Going out to the country is always a nice change of pace from the concrete jungle that is Tokyo. Sometimes I need to go somewhere with no people to keep my sanity.

Oh, my upcoming issue of Avengers Fairy Tales from Marvel has been solicited with a kickass Claire Wendling cover.

She never disappoints does she? Season 5, I believe. They probably aren't new but it was news to me when I fell upon them on youtube. He's just as inspirational and awesome as I last saw him in the US version of the show. Granted, the UK shows are far superior and involving. Probably cuz you get Ramsay himself doing the narrating and none of the cussing is taken out. Just how it should be!

Things have changed a bit on the work front for me this year. Along with some Marvel work I've taken which I'm really excited to be apart of, the project I've been slaving over for the past 6 months has sorta fallen through. I don't feel like giving details since it's been rather lamenting but, at the same time, it's helped me get focused and slapped me out of relying on people too much. I learned a lot throughout the process regardless so it hasn't gone all to waste. I'm currently in the process of editing some breakdowns for something I've concocted myself so, for better or worse, it's all me. It's along the lines of where I feel my strengths lie so it's been much more satisfying and entertaining. Anyway, that's that.

The last of the commissions from last year:TAK

Baffled

Found that ST:TNG episode I was looking for. My life has been fulfilled.

I went to the gym today. There's nothing notable in just that but there was this guy on a cycling machine and no one was using any of the machines next to or remotely close to him and it took me only half a second to realize why. He freakin' stank! A good 5m radius around him was a dead zone. Seriously. I couldn't believe it. Okay, it's a gym. People sweat and people stink. It's part of nature. But, man... This dude was unREAL. But the worst thing about it was I was at a total loss to do anything about it. If someone doesn't wipe sweat off a machine after use, okay, that's grounds for an "ahem" but this?? I still haven't thought of a solution...

Oh, I did a quick interview for a site called Blazedent. I talk about Marvel, Japan and some other stuff. Been busy with an array of things over the holidays that continued into the new year. I haven't even gone to see relatives in Tokyo yet. Dammit...

I'm enjoying the first big snowfall in Tokyo right now. Well, I mean, it melts as soon as it hits the ground but it's nice to get some of the white stuff for a change. Come to think of it, I haven't experienced plowing a sidewalk or driveway in quite a long time. I suppose there's merit in that for a Canadian.

I've picked up some Marvel work for the coming months. Don't fret. It's cuz I'm broke and need some cash to keep me here. I've still got projects for Japan in the works but it's just gonna take a bit longer.

I've been watching old Star Trek: TNG episodes online recently. It's something I used to do back in Vancouver since it was on, like, 3 times a day. And with the new movie set for release in about a year, I figure it's a good a time as any to re-aquaint myself again with klingon cleavage and super stiff karate moves. Nah, I loves it. Oh, I've been trying to find the show-ender entitled "All good things". It was a 2 parter. If you know where to find it online give me a shout. It would be much appreciated.

Anyway, some more commissions I sent out last year:

TAK

Midnight train to 2008

Happy New Year, all.

To celebrate:

TAK

Festa-rama

Man, had a helluva few weeks.

First of all, I managed to squeeze in I am Legend at the theatre. Good flick. I was pleasantly surprised even though it deviated quite heavily from the book. They really handled the suspense and horror elements intellegently and effectively. I could see homage shots from various past horror movies but it never took away from what was happening in front of me so kudos for that. Will Smith was hulkingly huge in this movie. I suppose it fits the survival nature of his character and surrounding setting but he also plays the role of scientist which was less convincing. But, meh. I didn't mind so much about that. I don't wanna spoil anything so I'll just wrap up by mentioning the ending was a mixed bag but I could see why the choice was made. It's a choice that dramatically altered the meaning of the title phrase but, as a whole, it made the movie work. I could go into detail and pick out flaws in logic and whatnot but there's really no point. Good flick.

I also managed to squeeze in a day at Jump Festa last weekend with fellow artist Ryusuke. I was warned that it was just a merchandising op for Jump and Shueisha and skipped it last year but, y'know, I had a great time at the show. I didn't buy anything but they had enough things to gawk at that it made the trip more than worth it for me.

The inviting banner that almost warns you by it's size of the cash you can conceivably drop in the next few minutes. The great thing is, you don't have to spend if you don't want to. The show is completely free.

I'm used to long lines in Japan but this is ridiculous. Of course, the line on the right is for the show exclusive goods area while the line on the left is for entry into the general show. Talk about raking it in, eh?

A friendly but statuesque Naruto greets you at the door.

Along with the dude from Bleach.

Aside from the big displays, they had an assortment of sections for card games, video games and various subsidiery company booths. They also had a large stage for voice actors and artists to speak at but I missed all those since I got there late and the big names like Kishimoto and Kubo were due to appear the next day. It woulda been cool to put a face to the work but I don't think I could deal with the crowds that were guaranteed to come to see them talk. The most notable section for me was the original art galleries that were erected with actual pages and colour covers. Tight security and a no photo policy hampered any effort to take pictures of all that though. I was really surprised at the amount of artists working analog (aka pen and ink with dot-toner) and how much white-out was being used to fix mistakes. A large amount of cut-and-paste techniques too, like, digitally altering images, printing and cutting them out and glueing them to the final board. What you saw on the wall was exactly what was printed so the raw nature of everything was very refreshing. Pretty much everything you wanted to see was there and you were never forced to purchase anything.

Anyway, more photos in my flickr.

I'm kinda tired so I'll leave it at that. More updates soonish.

TAK

Things on the side

I've recently been watching Rise of the Video Game from Discovery Channel. Along with outlining video game history it's very up-to-date with current themes and issues so it's been quite entertaining. With the lack of new shows like Heroes and Lost, it's been a great way to kill some time on the side.

I read I am Legend by Richard Matheson last week in anticipation of the movie. Along with the main story, which was surprisingly short but efficient, it had a handful of shorts by him so that was an unexpected bonus. I had heard of the ending to IaL in the past so the plot wasn't much of a shocker but the methodical build-up was a good insight into how to do it effectively. It was my first exposure to Matheson's writing and I quite liked it so I may pick up some more of his work. Anyway, the reviews for the film haven't been very generous so I've lowered my expectations and don't expect much from it. Rumour has it that it deviates from the source material quite a bit. So much so that it just ends up being an action flick. Oh well. Seeing a deserted New York should be quite cool.

More commissions:

TAK

Sono 6

TAK
